On our blog

We travel as a family to our little second home in France throughout the year, and spend a few months there in the summer . It is our happy place , and a place to completely switch off. The dogs come too , and various friends and family arrive at different times

One of the things that we love about our stays in France is visiting the fantastic French markets . These are a huge part of life in France and an integral part of France's famed tradition of good eating. A taste of real France .

Stunning paintings by Claude Nicaud

We visit our local town of St Antonin Noble Val regularly when we stay at our French home. The French market there each Sunday is one of the best in the area.

The local artist Claude Nicaud lives in the hills above the town and we love his vibrant paintings of the surroundings. We have bought some of his original paintings and visited his wonderful studio above the Gorge d’Averyron .

Stunning vibrant and colourful paintings

One of our favourite films

If you would like to find out a little bit more about the area we love so much , this film starring Helen Mirren was shot in our local town of St Antonin Noble Val , and the main character visits the French market there regularly.

An Indian family moves to France and sets up a restaurant opposite a well-established French haute cuisine restaurant. An intense professional rivalry breaks out between the restaurateurs.

A favourite French recipe- Tartiflette

Eating outside and barbecues are one of the Hettie family’s favourite pastimes.

I love this French recipe as a side dish for a barbecue , using French cheese Reblouchon and potatoes as the main ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1kg/2lb 4oz potatoes peeled
  • 250g/8oz bacon lardons
  • 2shallots
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 100ml/3½fl oz white wine
  • 200ml/7fl oz double cream
  • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 whole Reblochon cheese (about 450g/1lb), sliced

"

Method

  1. For the tartiflette, preheat oven to 200C/400F/Gas 7.
  2. Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of salted boiling water for 5-10 minutes, or until tender.
  3. Drain and set aside to cool slightly.
  4. Meanwhile, heat a frying pan until hot and fry the bacon, shallots and garlic for 4-5 minutes, or until golden-brown. Deglaze the pan with the white wine and continue to cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.
  5. Slice the potatoes thinly and layer into an ovenproof gratin dish with the bacon mixture. Pour over the double cream. Season with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Layer the Reblochon slices on top.
  6. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is golden-brown and bubbling.

Sian’s special added ingredient is to add mushrooms which we love and have with everything

We were delighted that our blog on travelling to France was featured in a latest newsletter for Eurotunnel. You can read it below!

"Family-run business Hettie create bags and accessories (including pet accessories!) that are all made and produced in Britain. However when it comes to taking time off the family pack up their car and their four-legged friends and head for the south of France to relax. Here’s mum of the family Siân’s pet-friendly guide to the local area "
